Virtual realities

We've been on the road since September 20, 2011, and although all of the properties were fully occupied before we left, life happens.

To be prepared, we brought everything we needed in the event we had to fill a property while we were in travel status. We have our advertising copy, our property photos and our usual identifiers and passwords. We were prepared for any eventuality.

However a new challenge emerged. One of our major advertising sites - which is global - would not allow us to post our Canadian adverts from international locations. The property we were trying to list was located in Canada and as such we had to be in Canada in order to complete the transaction. The rationale, as we understand, is to limit spam on the advertising site.

Plan B was set in motion. We contacted our back-up in Ottawa, sent the advert off to them and voila, up and running within 24 hours.

This was a new and valuable learning in understanding the 'virtual' aspects of our operations.

A global advertiser does not necessarily mean one can advertise from any location. Important to know in considering remote management of our business.
